Justice or Barbarism? The Story of the Killer Whose Screams Echoed Within City Walls.

“We want him to suffer!” – those were the chilling words from the citizens of Marrakesh that led to a killer being walled up alive. We uncover the dark truth behind the 36 victims of the “Lady Killer.”

At the dawn of the 20th century, the bustling streets of Marrakesh concealed one of the most horrifying secrets in Moroccan history. At the center of this nightmare stood Hadj Mohammed Mesfioui – a respected cobbler whose shop became a deadly trap for dozens of innocent women.

Mesfioui acted with predatory precision. In an era where literacy was a luxury, his small shoe shop became a death trap. Under the guise of a benevolent merchant, he lured unsuspecting women by offering free assistance in reading or writing letters – a gesture of kindness that was, in reality, their final connection to the outside world.

Playing a sinister role in this scheme was Rahala, his 70-year-old accomplice. With the appearance of a wise and kind grandmother, she easily dispelled any suspicion, instilling a false sense of security in the victims. Once the women crossed the threshold, the trap snapped shut. Mesfioui would drug them and then end their lives with cold-blooded efficiency to steal their modest belongings. The most shocking aspect was the sheer pointlessness of these murders; often, he took lives for sums that barely covered the cost of a daily meal.

His arrest came only after the family of a missing woman persistently traced her final steps to his shop. Excavations beneath the premises revealed a gruesome scene – a mass grave containing the remains of at least 36 victims. The news of the “Lady Killer” sent shockwaves across the globe.

What followed was a brutal display of public humiliation: for four agonizing weeks, Mesfioui was led daily from his dungeon to the city market. There, under the furious gaze of the crowd, he endured ten lashes with thorny acacia branches. On June 11, 1906, the day of final reckoning arrived. He was walled up alive in a narrow stone cell within the bazaar walls. For two days, muffled, eerie screams echoed from within the stone masonry, until a final, haunting silence on the third day ended one of the darkest criminal sagas in history.
